The beaches on Peaks Island Maine are the perfect backdrop to a summer afternoon.  It's only about a 20 minute ferry ride from Portland and quite a small island.  It has shops, restaurants, and even a guy who will rent you a bike to ride all over the island all day.  It's a great destination if you are looking to do something a little different and get away from Portland.
